Memphis Installment of '-stasis'

This is the show '-stasis'. The first installment was completed November 30th, 2007 in Memphis, TN.

Artist Statement
This installation glimpses the shared mental space between intimately connected individuals. It is an area where words and actions requiring resolution are allowed to exist in a less potent, static form until time or circumstance necessitates responsiveness.

Meaning of what flows through the periphery is determined and altered jointly by the large heads at the center. Equal and diligent maneuvering of communicative exchange is required to maintain connectivity and continual access to this plane. -Leandra Urrutia

Many of the forms in this installation are slip cast. I learned how to do this in the summer of 2007 from Richard Notkin at Archie Bray in Helena, Montana. The large heads and ears are hand-built.

The two-headed form in the middle of these large heads spins.

The letters in the tubing are dyed by hand with ink. The circular black spotting is also ink.

The vinyl letters on the floor were all peeled and powdered by hand so they would lose their stickiness.

Accoutrements

Accoutrements - statement
Attraction is dubious by nature and difficult to navigate once embraced by its spell. Despite intentions and circumstance, it is equipped to bend our attention and, potentially, change the course of our direction. That initial moment, that recognition of what catches the eye, is a force to be reckoned with.

This was made using lace dipped in thick slip. It is very delicate.

The inside of these forms have maribou feathers and rhinestones to lure the viewer into them.

The rhinestones are Swarovski flat back crystals.

These pieces were inspired by insects I used to make.

These forms have wooden axe handles. The tops of them are encrusted with rhinestones.
